As of October 2026, most puppies on the Nepali classifieds site Hamrobazaar are listed at Rs 5,000–45,000. A Japanese Spitz starts at about Rs 3,000, a Labrador, Golden Retriever or Husky at Rs 5,500–28,000, and a toy Pomeranian goes up to Rs 95,000. Adopting from a Kathmandu shelter such as KAT Centre is free.
How much does a puppy cost in Nepal?
The dogs section of Hamrobazaar, a Nepali classifieds site, carried 227 ads on 5 October 2026. Of these, 95 offered puppies of the 12 breeds below, posted between July and October 2026 by 35 sellers. Stud and mating ads, adult dogs being rehomed, crosses and free ads are left out. These are asking prices; 49 of the 95 ads were marked negotiable.
The middle price was Rs 16,000. 80 of the 95 ads (84%) asked between Rs 5,000 and Rs 45,000. The third column adds two published price lists: Indreni Pet Zone’s breed page and PriceInNepal, updated 2 October 2026.

Large and guard breeds
| Breed | Hamrobazaar ads, Jul–Oct 2026 | Shop and price-list figures |
|---|---|---|
| Labrador | Rs 5,500–25,000 (7 ads) | Rs 12,000–30,000 |
| Golden Retriever | Rs 11,000–28,000 (10 ads) | Rs 12,000–25,000 |
| Siberian Husky | Rs 11,000–25,000 (12 ads) | Rs 35,000–75,000 |
| German Shepherd | Rs 20,000–40,000 (4 ads) | Rs 15,000–95,000 |
| Doberman | Rs 9,999–35,000 (4 ads) | Rs 20,000–85,000 |
| Rottweiler | Rs 20,000–58,000 (7 ads) | Rs 25,000–35,000 |
Two more Husky ads asked Rs 5,000; see the red flags below. Indreni’s top German Shepherd price is for a show line, and it lists a Doberman from champion parents at Rs 350,000.
The sources disagree. ImNepal’s guide quotes wider ranges, because it includes pedigree and imported lines: Rs 70,000–400,000 and more for a Husky, and Rs 30,000–250,000 and more for a German Shepherd. Only 1 of the 95 Hamrobazaar ads mentioned papers.
Bhote kukur, Pitbull and Tibetan Mastiff. No Bhote kukur was for sale in the sample; 2 were offered free. PriceInNepal lists the Bhote kukur at Rs 10,000–15,000, The Rising Nepal reported about Rs 10,000 for a female pup and Rs 20,000 for a male in 2023, and an Admandu ad asked Rs 35,000 in 2024. No pure Pitbull puppy was listed; PriceInNepal gives Rs 35,000. No Tibetan Mastiff was for sale either, and ImNepal quotes Rs 150,000–800,000 and more. Some sellers and price lists call the Bhote kukur a “Himalayan mastiff”, so ask which breed you are buying. To compare the guard breeds, see guard dog breeds for a home in Nepal.
Why do prices for the same breed vary so much?
- Sex. 12 ads priced males and females separately. Each time, the male cost 1.2 to 2 times as much: a German Shepherd male at Rs 40,000 against a female at Rs 25,000, or a Japanese Spitz male at Rs 8,000 against a female at Rs 4,000.
- Papers. One Doberman ad named “KCI registered” parents and asked Rs 30,000; another Doberman ad asked Rs 9,999. KCI is the Kennel Club of India. Show and champion lines cost the most.
- Import and lineage. A Boxer from an “import line” was listed at Rs 60,000, a home-bred Boxer at Rs 15,000. Several of the highest-priced ads say the puppies or their parents came from India.
- Labels. “Toy”, “wooly coat”, “blue eyes” and “full white” are selling points. 9 of the 10 Pomeranian ads called the puppy “toy”.
- Age. Ads that give an age mostly offer puppies of 35–55 days. Dogs being rehomed often ask less: a 1-year-old Husky was listed at Rs 9,000.
- Vaccines. 26 of the 95 ads mentioned vaccination. A first vaccine already given saves you a vet visit, if the seller can show the card.
What is the cheapest way to get a dog in Nepal?
Adopt. Several Kathmandu shelters rehome dogs free.
- KAT Centre, Budhanilkantha. Adoption is free. KAT Centre spays or neuters and vaccinates its animals, asks you to sign an ownership contract, and gives free basic health checks for 1 year after adoption.
- Sneha’s Care, Bhaisepati, Lalitpur. A June 2026 guide by Bunopets says the dog is free and the adopter pays for transport and future vet care, and that the shelter is open 9 am – 5 pm. Ask the shelter for its current process.
- Community Dog Welfare Centre, Kopan, Gokarneshwor. It lists dogs for adoption in Nepal and abroad on its website.
- HamroPets. A free listing site where owners and rescues post dogs. It says it never charges adopters.
Hamrobazaar had 8 adoption ads in the same period, mostly young adult and older dogs, from 8 months to 7 years old.
If you want a breed, the Japanese Spitz is the cheapest: 17 ads asked Rs 3,000–9,000. Lhasa Apso puppies were listed from Rs 4,500, and female Labradors from Rs 5,500. A low price does not prove a pure breed.
What does a dog cost in its first year in Kathmandu?
Food, vet care, grooming and training add up. As of October 2026, these are the main costs:
| Cost | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Rs 2,000–15,000 a month; a 20 kg bag of Drools Optimum was Rs 5,800 | ImNepal; Daraz |
| Puppy vaccines | Rs 3,000–10,000 or more for the course; boosters Rs 1,000–5,000 a year | ImNepal |
| Other vet care | Rs 500–5,000 a month | ImNepal |
| Groom at Supreme Pet Home | Rs 1,200 (up to 10 kg), Rs 1,600 (10–25 kg), Rs 2,000 (25 kg +); with a haircut Rs 1,800, Rs 2,500, Rs 3,200 | Supreme Pet Home |
| Training | Rs 999 online to Rs 19,999 for 7 home classes; 25-day packages Rs 25,000–36,000 | Canine Companions; PetMama |
Add it up. A small dog on economy food, with 4 grooms a year and no paid training, costs about Rs 38,000 in its first year. A large dog on the costliest food, with 6 grooms and a 25-day training package, can cost about Rs 300,000. ImNepal’s own estimate is Rs 5,000–20,000 a month.
Vaccine prices come from one guide, so ask 2 or 3 vets near you before you budget. Deworming and tick treatment are part of routine vet care; ask your vet for the schedule and the price. For more on grooming costs, see dog grooming prices in Kathmandu.
Red flags when you buy a puppy
- A puppy under 8 weeks old. Most vets advise that a puppy stays with its mother until at least 8 weeks. Yet 39 of the 43 Hamrobazaar ads that gave an age in days offered younger puppies, many at 45–55 days. Ask for the date of birth, and wait if you need to.
- No vaccine card. Ask for a card with the vaccine name, the date and the vet’s stamp. Only 26 of the 95 ads mentioned a vaccine.
- A “pure” breed far below the market. Two Husky ads asked Rs 5,000, a third of the usual ad price. A cheap “pure” puppy may be a cross or a sick dog, or the ad may be a scam.
- A “guarantee” instead of papers. 14 ads promised a “100% breed guarantee”; 1 mentioned papers. If a seller claims KCI papers, ask to see both parents’ certificates and check them with the Kennel Club of India.
- No visit. Ask to see the mother and where the puppies live. 70 of the 95 ads offered delivery. Meet the puppy before you pay, and never send an advance for a puppy you have not seen.
- A puppy that looks unwell. Watch for runny eyes or nose, diarrhoea, a swollen belly or a dull coat. Take any new puppy to a vet in its first week, and ask your vet about anything that worries you.
Supreme Pet Home’s part
We help once your dog is home. Supreme Pet Home is at Kapan Ram Mandir, Budhanilkantha-11, open 7 am – 7 pm every day. Train runs puppy class from 3 months. Groom takes puppies from 12 weeks, after the second vaccine: a puppy groom (3–6 months) costs Rs 1,000. K9 trains guard dogs from 8 months to 5 years, with a vet check before stage 1. A training session costs Rs 1,500 (the first is the assessment), and guard dog training starts at Rs 60,000.
