At Supreme Pet Home in Kapan, Kathmandu, a groom costs Rs 1,200 (up to 10 kg), Rs 1,600 (10–25 kg) or Rs 2,000 (25 kg +), and Rs 1,800, Rs 2,500 or Rs 3,200 with a haircut. Other Kathmandu salons publish Rs 1,200–3,000 for a groom and Rs 2,500–6,000 with a haircut, as of October 2026.
Our prices by weight
We price a groom by weight, not by breed. We weigh your dog at check-in, and the scale sets the price.
| Weight | Groom | Groom + Haircut |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 kg | Rs 1,200 | Rs 1,800 |
| 10–25 kg | Rs 1,600 | Rs 2,500 |
| 25 kg + | Rs 2,000 | Rs 3,200 |
Puppies can come from 12 weeks of age, after the second vaccine. A puppy groom (3–6 months) costs Rs 1,000 and takes under 1 hour; from 6 months, dogs pay by weight.
What a groom includes
Every groom has the same 5 steps:
- Bath with shampoo and conditioner.
- Blow-dry and brush-out.
- Nail cutting.
- Ear cleaning.
- Hygiene trim.
Groom + Haircut adds a cut with scissors or clippers: the breed style, or the length you ask for. Choose it for coats that keep growing, such as Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Poodle and Maltese.
Two rules can change the plan on the day:
- Mats in the coat: we ask you before we shave.
- Ticks: tell us when you book. We groom dogs with ticks at the end of the day.
What other Kathmandu groomers charge
These prices come from each salon’s own website, checked on 5 October 2026. “Groom” here means a bath, dry, brush-out, nails and ears, without a full haircut. Each salon words its packages differently, so read the inclusions before you compare.
| Salon (area) | Groom | Groom with haircut |
|---|---|---|
| Kathmandu Pet Spa (Baneshwor, Pepsicola, Lalitpur) | Rs 1,500–2,100 | No separate price |
| Grooming Ghar (Boudha) | From Rs 1,200 (short coats) | From Rs 2,500 |
| PetMama (Baluwatar, Jhamsikhel) | Rs 2,310–2,860 | Rs 990 extra |
| Grey Standard (Maharajgunj) | Rs 2,500–3,000 | Rs 4,800–6,000 |
| Supreme Pet Home (Kapan) | Rs 1,200–2,000 | Rs 1,800–3,200 |
Put together, a groom in Kathmandu costs about Rs 1,200–3,000 as of October 2026, and a groom with a full haircut about Rs 1,800–6,000.
A few notes on the table:
- Pet Spa’s home page shows one price for its regular bath, Rs 1,500. Its service page lists Rs 1,500, Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,100 by size, so the table gives the range. The regular bath includes a trim and tidy-up.
- Grooming Ghar lists “starting” prices. Its hygiene groom for all breeds starts at Rs 1,800.
- PetMama prices each bath package by size and adds Rs 990 for a haircut.
- Grey Standard’s full groom adds the haircut and a sanitary shave to its basic groom.
What changes the price
Weight. Every salon above prices by size, but the bands differ. “Medium” means 10–20 kg at Grey Standard, 11–25 kg at Pet Spa, 11–26 kg at PetMama and 10–25 kg with us. A Siberian Husky weighs 16–27 kg by the AKC breed standard, so the same dog can be medium at one salon and large at the next.
Coat. A coat that keeps growing needs a haircut, and a haircut costs more everywhere. Thick double coats, such as Husky and German Shepherd, shed an undercoat, and salons sell de-shedding as an extra.
Mats and ticks. The salons that list extras charge more to work out mats or to use an anti-tick shampoo. Some sell these as a full bath, others as an add-on to a groom:
| Extra | Kathmandu Pet Spa | PetMama | Grey Standard | Supreme Pet Home |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tick and flea bath | From Rs 1,800 | Rs 2,750–3,245 | Rs 400 added to a groom | Rs 900 added to a groom |
| De-shedding | From Rs 1,900 | Rs 2,750–3,245 | Rs 700 added to a groom | Rs 800 added to a groom |
| De-matting | From Rs 1,800 | Rs 3,080–3,960 | Rs 700 added to a groom | Rs 1,000–2,000, by the coat |
| Nail trim and quick tidy | Rs 400 | Rs 650–850 | Not sold alone | Nail cutting in every groom |
Our other add-ons: paw pad trim and care Rs 400, nail grinding Rs 500 and perfume Rs 200. A medicated bath with your vet’s shampoo adds Rs 500 (all groom prices).
How often should I groom my dog?
Coat type decides it. Use this as a general guide:
| Coat | Breeds | Groom or bath |
|---|---|---|
| Short and smooth | Boxer, Doberman, Dalmatian | Every 2–3 months |
| Double coat | Husky, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Pomeranian | A groom every 8–12 weeks; a bath when dirty |
| Long, keeps growing | Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Poodle, Maltese | Every 4–6 weeks, with a haircut |
The short and long-coat intervals follow Hill’s guidance; the double-coat interval is our own advice. Between grooms, brush a double coat with a slicker brush and a comb at least once a week, the American Kennel Club advises. Brush long coats more often, so mats don’t form.
Kathmandu adds 3 things to watch:
- Dust. In the dry months, dust settles into the coat. Brush it out rather than adding baths: bathing too often strips the skin’s natural oils and can leave it dry and itchy (Hill’s Pet Nutrition).
- Monsoon damp. In a humid season, a double coat that isn’t brushed can pack down and hold moisture next to the skin (AKC). Dry your dog fully after a wet walk.
- Shedding. Double coats bred for cold places may shed 4 times a year, or all year, where it is warmer (AKC). Don’t shave a Husky or a German Shepherd to stop it: shaving damages the coat that shields the skin from sun and cold. The AKC advises a shave only when mats stop the skin from drying.
For Kukur Tihar on Sunday 8 November 2026, book the groom a few days ahead so the coat is clean for the tika and garland. See Kukur Tihar 2026 for the puja.
Tick baths, jumra and luto: what a groom can’t fix
Ticks (kirna). A 2025 study of 341 dogs in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan found ticks on about 28% of them. About 3 in 10 carried a tick-borne infection, most often Babesia (Aryal et al., BMC Veterinary Research).
A tick bath helps the dog on the day. It does not protect the dog next week:
- Shampoo rinses off. Merck Animal Health says a flea shampoo protects for a few days at most.
- Many ticks spend over 90% of their life off the dog, in grass and yards, so new ones climb back on (Merck Veterinary Manual).
For prevention, ask your vet which tick-control product suits your dog. See the vet promptly if your dog has many ticks, or if a bite site turns red or swells.
Jumra (lice). Shampoo can kill lice, but it does not remove the eggs (nits) glued to the hair. Eggs keep hatching for 2–3 weeks, so treatment has to be repeated, and bedding needs a hot, soapy wash (Merck). Ask your vet for the product and the schedule.
Luto (mange). Mange is caused by mites in the skin, and it needs a vet. The vet finds the mites with skin scrapings and sets the treatment, which can mean medicated baths, dips and medicines over weeks or months. Sarcoptic mange spreads easily between dogs and can pass to people. Regular baths can also hide the signs and make the mites harder to find (Merck). See the vet first. A groomer can only follow the vet’s plan, and should hear about the diagnosis when you book.
